Moving is a big stress even for calm Scottish cats (Scottish Fold and Scottish Straight). But if everything is done correctly, in just 5–10 days the little one will be running around the apartment like the boss
First 24 hours: “safe room”
Choose one quiet room (bedroom or office). Place there:
- – litter box with the same filler that was used in the cattery
- – bowls with water and familiar food
- – bed or box with soft bedding
- – a couple of toys and a scratching post
Bring an item with the cattery’s scent (blanket, toy) — this is the strongest anti-stress. Do not let the kitten explore the entire apartment right away — large spaces scare them
Days 2–5: gradual territory expansion
Open one new room per day. Let them explore first when the house is quiet. Always leave access to the “safe room” — they will return there to sleep and hide.
Food and litter box — no sudden changes
The food should remain the one the kitten is used to — for at least 4–6 months. A sudden diet change during adaptation can cause digestive upset and extra stress. Litter box: use only the filler the kitten was accustomed to in the cattery. At Madeira Velvet Paws, we use exclusively high-quality fillers — fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and antibacterial, so our kittens almost never have litter box issues.
Daily routine and play
Scottish cats love stability: Feeding at the same time Play 3–4 times a day for 10–15 minutes (feathers, balls, tunnels) Calm voice, no sudden movements
Signs of normal adaptation
- The kitten comes out of hiding on its own
- Eats and drinks normally
- Plays and purrs
- Sleeps not only hidden but also in open places
IMPORTANT: If after 7–10 days the baby is still hiding and hasn’t eaten for more than 24 hours — call the breeder or vet
Adapting Scottish kittens on Madeira — our approach
On Madeira, we prepare kittens for moving from the first weeks: accustom them to the carrier, different sounds and smells socialize in a large cat family (4 generations live together) give a “home scent” — a piece of bedding or toy send detailed instructions + stay in touch 24/7 for the first two weeks
Thanks to this, 98% of our Scottish cats are already running around the new home on day 3–5 and sleeping in the owners’ arms.
Why a Scottish kitten from our cattery adapts faster
- Maximum socialization from birth
- Calm and confident character
- Full “dowry” package (home scent, transition food, recommendations)
- Breeder support at any time
